Different Methods For Weight Loss Now

by Chris Arribbat

Weight loss is one of the most sought after personal goals for people seeking to feel healthier. Unfortunately, only a minority of those looking to shed weight and keep it off are successful. Too often people set unrealistic weight lose goals and/or are uninformed about what the best approach is for weight reduction. There is, however, good news for those who in the past have been frustrated in their attempts to get leaner.

Before taking any steps toward dropping pounds, it is always a good idea to consult your doctor. He or she will go over your medical health and set any possible restrictions on physical activities and/or dietary changes. Your physician will work with you in setting and reaching realistic goals.

Most weight reduction experts feel that a reasonable goal is losing 5-10% of body weight. Thus, someone who currently weighs 180 pounds should strive to lose 9-18 pounds. And as you have probably heard before, it is far better to lose weight gradually (1-2 pounds a week) than it is to see erratic losses.

Even though it may seem like a good idea, skipping meals is one of the worst things you can do when trying to lose weight. Aside from the fact that it tends to make you hungrier and prone to binge eating later, it also has physiological effects on the body. When the human body does not get enough food intakes, it believes it is starving. To compensate for this, it lowers its metabolism, the rate at which it burns calories. Since, in order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in, a lowered metabolism is a hindrance and will sabotage your efforts.

One effective approach is "grazing." This means eating something every few hours during the day. This keeps you from getting hungry and eating portions that are too big. An apple or banana eaten a couple of hours before dinner will make you less likely to load up your plate when the meal is served.

Another mistake for dieters is confusing thirst for hunger. Thirst actually has the same symptoms as hunger. Many people feel that they are hungry and eat something when all they really need is a glass of water. They key is to drink plenty of water before you become dehydrated. Water is also a way to prevent feeling bloated and is a better choice than sugary drinks. Drink at least 8 glasses each day.

When it comes to what to eat, avoid sugary, high fat, high calories things. These types of foods will undo any good that you have done. Instead, look for vegetables, fruits, seafood, lean meats and high fiber items. Reading the nutrition labels on packaging will go a long way toward making smart food purchases. Labels will provide information regarding what a serving size is considered to be and how many calories and grams of fat and carbohydrates are in each serving.

Of course any diet should be coupled with an exercise program, even if it is only a short nightly stroll around the block. In so doing, you will meet your weight loss goal faster, and you will realize a greater sense of well-being.
